US Open Day Two Preview

Rafael Nadal will look to follow Federer's strong start tonight as we preview five matches from the day's schedule.

Denis Istomin

Robby Ginepri (1.3) v Eduardo Schwank (4) 17:00

Ginepri has won both their previous meetings and comes into this match in the better form of the two. Ginepri reached the fourth round at Roland Garros this year and is a former semi-finalist here. Moreover, this is his favourite surface and he’s won nine of his last 12 outdoor hard court matches when shorter than 1.50 to win, with six straight-set wins and all by at least four games.

Schwank is in poor form having won just one of his last nine matches back to the French Open, as he lost a set 6/2 or worse in the last eight of those defeats. Moreover, he’s lost his last eight matches when the underdog including suffering four 6/0 set losses. Furthermore, he’s lost eight of his last nine completed hard court matches when the underdog, with all eight defeats by at least four games (all best-of-three set matches) and six by six or more.

Recommendation: Ginepri to win -6.0 games at 2.0, 10 Bet

Philipp Petzschner (1.37) v Dusan Lojda (3.65) 17:40

Petzschner has risen 30 places in the rankings since February and impressed at Wimbledon where he led Nadal 2-1 in the third round before losing. Since then he has failed to win a match, but was only narrowly beaten by the in-form Dolgopolov in Toronto and then drew Querrey in Cincinnati. He’s twice faced qualifiers at Grand Slams and on both occasions he lost the opening set before prevailing. Moreover, he’s won five of his last six matches against players currently ranked 101-200, with four 2-0 wins and all five by four or more games.

Lojda is making his Grand Slam debut and his qualifying wins were his first not on clay since winning a Challenger match on hard courts last November. Moreover, he’s lost six of his last nine hard court matches against players currently ranked in the top 300, with five straight-set defeats.

Recommendation: Petzschner to win -5.0 games at 1.95, Sporting Bet

Julien Benneteau (1.63) v Radek Stepanek (2.4) 19:30

Stepanek has won two of their previous three meetings but is in terrible form right now. The Czech reached the quarters in New Haven last week, but had already lost in qualifying and was only playing as a lucky loser. He’s now lost 10 of his last 13 Tour level matches this year and five of his last six when the underdog, including the only two such matches since January, both in straight sets.

In contrast Benneteau held match points against Nadal in Cincinnati during his last match and has been in good form recently, after reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon. Moreover, he’s won five of his last six matches against players currently ranked 26-50 and eight of 11 hard court matches when 1.50-1.80 to win since 2009. Furthermore, he’s won all eight of his Grand Slam matches since 2008 when the favourite.

Recommendation: Benneteau to win -3.5 games at 2.2, Betfair

Denis Istomin (1.18) v Maximo Gonzalez (6) 21:40

Istomin has improved his ranking by 70 places in the past 12 months and reached the final in New Haven last week. He reached the third round here a year ago and has matched that at the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, with his Wimbledon performances particularly impressive as he beat Wawrinka and took two sets off Berdych.

Istomin has served first in 14 of his last 15 matches, and has had fewer than 10 games in the first set of seven of his last eight completed opening sets. Furthermore, 14 of the 20 matches he’s been the favourite for this year have had -9.5 first set games, including four of five when shorter than 1.5.

Gonzalez has only played 18 hard court matches in his career and has been having a poor year. He’s had fewer than 10 games in the first set in 18/32 matches in the past 12 months. Furthermore, he’s lost nine of his last 11 matches against players currently in the top 100 with -9.5 first set games in eight of those matches.

Recommendation: Fewer than 10 first set games at 2.2, Sporting Bet

Yaroslava Shvedova (1.27) v Lourdes Domingues-Lino (5) 21:40

Shvedova has been in mixed form recently but was a quarter-finalist at the French Open, reached the fourth round at Miami and beat Petrova a couple of weeks ago. Furthermore, she’s won nine of her last 11 matches when 1.1-1.4 to win, with eight 2-0 wins and nine matches having 20 or fewer games.

Dominguez-Lino came through qualifying but has lost her last nine Tour matches and 13 of her last 14 Tour hard court matches. Moreover, she’s lost 12/13 matches against players currently ranked 11-50 including losing all four matches not on hard courts 2-0, and she suffered a double-bagel against Wickmayer in the first round of the Australian Open this year.

Recommendation: Under 20 games at 1.90, Sporting Bet
