Paris Masters Monday Preview

The final Masters event of the year before the Tour finals starts today in Paris and we highlight three matches.

Richard Gasquet

Feliciano Lopez (1.9) v Arnaud Clement (2.1)

Clement has won two of the previous three matches between these players, including in the first round here a year ago. However, the Frenchman has lost 13 of his last 15 matches against players now ranked 11-50, including six of seven against those ranked 26-50. Furthermore, he’s lost in the first round of four of his last six events and has not beaten a player inside the top 100 since the US Open.

Lopez has not won for over a month but that is largely due to some very tough draws against top-ranked and in-form players. However, he has won seven of eight matches against players currently ranked outside the top 50 since Wimbledon.

Recommendation: Lopez to win at 1.9, Victor Chandler

Stanislas Wawrinka (1.2) v Josselin Ouanna (5)

Wawrinka won their only previous meeting but that should have little bearing as it was over seven years ago on clay.

The Swiss is in reasonable form having come close to beating Federer in Stockholm a few weeks ago and since 2009 he’s won 13 of 14 matches against players currently ranked 101-200, with his last seven wins all in straight sets and five by five clear games. Furthermore, he’s won 14 of his last 16 first round Masters matches with 12 wins in straight sets and 11 by five or more games.

Ouanna has come through qualifying but has little form otherwise. The Frenchman has lost nine of his last 10 matches against players now ranked 11-50 with eight defeats in straight sets and five by five or more games. Furthermore, this is just his second match at a Masters event having lost in straight sets on his debut here two years ago.

Recommendation: Wawrinka to win -4.5 games at 2.23, Pinnacle

Richard Gasquet (1.3) v Nicolas Mahut (4)

Gasquet has won their previous two matches, both at Grand Slams in 2007, without dropping a set. Gasquet also has a good record playing in France having won this year in Nice and a Challenger in Bordeaux, while he reached the semis on his last appearance in this event. Furthermore, he’s won nine of 11 matches against his compatriots that are currently outside the top 25 since 2009, including six wins in straight sets. Moreover, since April he’s won 10 of 11 matches against players currently ranked 101-200, for the loss of just one set and all 10 wins by at least five clear games.

Mahut won a Challenger title last month but his loss to Simon last week in Montpellier was his 10th defeat in 17 matches against his countrymen since 2009. Furthermore, he’s lost 14 of his last 20 matches against players currently ranked 11-100, including six of eight against players ranked 11-50.

Recommendation: Gasquet to win -4.5 games at 2.1, Sky Bet
