Champions League (Tues and Weds) 23/02/2010

After our success in all four matches last week, here we preview the remaining four Champions League Last 16 First Legs including Inter Milan v Chelsea.

Inter Milan's coach Jose Mourinho

Olympiakos (Bettorlogic ranking 24) v Bordeaux (10) (Tues, 19:45)

Match outcome: Olympiakos won all three of their home Group Stage matches and they are now unbeaten in eight at home in the Champions League. Furthermore, they have won eight of their last 12 games hosting sides with a Bettorlogic rank of 6-15.  Although Bordeaux topped Group A, this is their first-ever match in the knockout phase of the Champions League. French teams have lost eight of their 14 away knockout matches since 2003/04 while Greek sides have been successful in six of their eight home fixtures against French opposition in this competition.

Recommendation: Olympiakos Win 3.00, William Hill

VfB Stuttgart (35) v Barcelona (1) (Tues, 19:45)

Over/Under: VfB Stuttgart have won just two of their six home matches since 2007/08, although half of these games have featured four or more scores. Similarly, four of the last five games in which a German side ranked outside the top-10 has played host to top-5 ranked team have settled the +3.5 goals market. Barcelona have won five of six undefeated trips to teams ranked 21-50 since 2007/08 (four +2.5 goals, two +4.5 goals). 12 of Spanish clubs’ last 22 matches at German opposition have seen at least three scores.

Recommendation: +3.0 goals 2.38, Bet365

CSKA Moscow (29) v Sevilla (14) (Weds, 19:45)

Match outcome: There isn’t a great deal to go on in this match as neither side has much knockout stage experience in the Champions League. CSKA Moscow have lost half of their home matches since 2004/05 and six of their 12 such games have seen no more than a single score. Moreover, Russian teams have been beaten in four of their seven games hosting Spanish sides this century (four -1.5 goals). Sevilla have won four of their seven away fixtures in this competition and Spanish teams ranked 11+ have lost only three of eight knockout matches on the road since 2005/06.

Recommendation: Sevilla Win DNB 1.90, Betfair

Inter Milan (7) v Chelsea (2) (Weds, 19:45)

HT outcome: Inter Milan have lost just three of their 20 home matches since 2005/06; half of these games were tied at the interval and nine contained no more than a single score. It should be noted, however, that their two games hosting English opposition in this sample were last season’s scoreless draw with Man Utd and their 1-0 loss to Liverpool in 2006/07. Italian teams have gone into the break level in 10 of their last 14 games hosting English opposition. Chelsea, meanwhile, have endured defeat in only two of their 15 away fixtures since 2007/08 with 10 half-time draws and six -1.5 goals games. Furthermore, Chelsea have been tied at the interval in half (5/10) of their recent trips to top-10 ranked sides.

Recommendation: HT Draw 2.10, Bet365
