Champions League GS6: Groups A&B

Spurs, in their debut Champions League campaign, will finish top of Group A if they beat Twente while Schalke and Lyon are through in Group B.

Group A: Twente (Bettorlogic rank 35) v Spurs (12) (Tues, 19:45)

Both of these sides are in their maiden Champions League campaigns and it is the English side who have coped best. Spurs (along with Inter) are guaranteed advancement to the Last 16 of the competition while Twente will finish third in Group A no matter the results on Matchday 6. If Spurs win here they will finish top of the group, but they are yet to win on the road in Europe. They have scored at least two goals in all of their five games (four times scoring at least three times), but they lost 4-3 at Inter and drew 2-2 at Werder. All five matches have had +2.5 goals and four have had +3.5 goals. Twente have been level at the break in all of their five matches with their last four being goalless at the interval. Both of their home games ended in stalemates.

Recommendation: No bet

Group A: Werder Bremen (39) v Inter Milan (5) (Tues, 19:45)

Werder Bremen have been dreadful domestically and in Europe this season. They have picked up just two points from their five matches and are certain to finish at the foot of Group A, as such they may be inclined to rest most of their first team here. Since 2005/06, they have won 7/14 home group matches and eight of the games have had +2.5 goals and, impressively, they have gained full points from all of their last three games hosting teams with a Bettorlogic rank of 1-10. Inter are similar to Werder in that they too are struggling on the home-front. Their 3-1 loss at Lazio on Friday evening has left them 10 points adrift of leaders and arch-rivals AC Milan. The current holders have quite a poor away record in this competition with just 6/17 group victories since 2005/06.

Recommendation: No bet

Group B: Benfica (30) v Schalke (25) (Tues, 19:45)

Benfica can’t make it through to the knockout stages. Even if they beat Schalke and Hapoel Tel-Aviv manage an historic victory in Lyon they will finish behind the French side because of their previous results. Benfica have won 7/11 home group games since 2005/06 and five of the successes have been W/W doubles. The hosts are also likely to field a strong side as the Europa League spot is still up for grabs. Schalke can guarantee top-spot, and thus an advantageous Last 16 draw, with a win here but they will have to defy their past history to do so. They have won just 2/11 away group games this century with six defeats and five L/Ls.

Recommendation: Benfica W/W 3.25, Bwin

Group B: Lyon (15) v Hapoel Tel-Aviv (142) (Tues, 19:45)

Lyon have lost consecutive group games for just the second time since 2000/01. Both of the defeats came on the road, but fortunately for their supporters they are a very strong home team in this competition. Since 2004/05, they have won 13/20 home group games with 10 W/W doubles and nine wins-to-nil and they have also won both of their games against teams ranked outside the top-100 in that period (both were W/Ws and to nil). Hapoel Tel-Aviv have bounced-back from three successive losses at the start of their campaign by holding Schalke to a goalless draw then beating Benfica 3-0. This is the Israeli-side’s first season in the Champions League, but worryingly no first-time qualifier has won their sixth group game when they have been the away team.

Recommendation: Lyon Win to nil 2.20, Bet365
