Champions League GS1: Groups A&B

Groups A and B kick-off on Tuesday evening as Spurs begin their maiden Champions League campaign with a trip to Werder.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp

Group A: Twente (Bettorlogic Rank 53) v Inter Milan (4) (Tues, 19:45)

Champions League debutants Twente are tasked with facing the holders in their opener. Ironically both of these teams have new managers at the helm despite both far-exceeding expectations last term. Despite the high-scoring nature of their domestic league, Dutch teams aren’t generally involved in thrillers in this competition. Since it’s inception, nine of the 12 group matches in which a Dutch side has hosted an Italian one have seen fewer than three goals, while the outright spoils have been shared – W5-D2-L5. Inter Milan have won 6/14 trips to teams ranked at least 20 places below themselves and nine of the games have settled the -2.5 goals market.

Recommendation: -2.5 goals 1.73, Skybet

Group A: Werder Bremen (18) v Spurs (36) (Tues, 19:45)

Werder Bremen have won 9/15 home group stage matches since 2004/05 and seven of the victories have been W/W doubles. The Germans have conceded in 11 of the 15 matches and as a result nine have seen more than a brace of scores. Unsurprisingly, Spurs are the lowest-ranked English team to ever appear in the Champions League – Blackburn were rated 35th following their Premier League triumph in 1995/96. English sides have won just 4/19 away group matches against German teams and three of the victors have been ranked higher than their opponents.

Recommendation: No bet

Group B: Lyon (8) v Schalke (29) (Tues, 19:45)

Lyon have been a permanent fixture in the Champions League this century and they rarely fail to excite their viewers. 20 of their 33 home groups stage matches have seen at least three goals while 13 have seen +3.5 and eight +4.5 goals. All of the last four matches in which a French side has hosted a German one in this competitions have settled the +2.5 goals market and three of the games have contained at least five goals. Schalke have won just 2/9 away group stage matches since 2001/02, but four of them have seen at least four scores.

Recommendation: +3.5 goals 4.20, Boyles

Group B: Benfica (16) v Hapoel Tel Aviv (77) (Tues, 19:45)

Benfica have drawn just 1/9 home group stage matches since 2005/06 with five wins and three defeats. They have, however, won 3/4 such games when they were the higher ranked sides which included two W/Ws, two wins-to-nil and two victories by two clear goals. Champions League newcomers have lost 6/8 group stage matches in Portugal since 1994/95. Interestingly, all of the games have seen both teams score and at least three goals.

Recommendation: +2.5 goals 1.93, Bet365
